Bethesda Men’s Basketball Battles Hard in Season Opener at Hope International
Fullerton, Calif. — October 28, 2025
The Bethesda University men’s basketball team tipped off the 2025–26 season Tuesday night with energy, heart, and a clear sense of purpose, facing off against one of the toughest teams in the GSAC, Hope International. Despite falling 98–68, the Flames showcased flashes of the fast, fearless, and disciplined brand of basketball that will define their season.
Bethesda came out strong, trading buckets early and even taking a nine-point lead midway through the first half. Behind the poise of Camron Durr, who led the way with 16 points and 2 steals, the Flames displayed a confident offensive rhythm — spacing the floor, sharing the ball, and attacking the rim with purpose. Miles Sulka added 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, demonstrating strong leadership and control of tempo on both ends of the court.
From deep, Edward Spencer connected on key perimeter shots, finishing with 8 points on 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, while Taeo Thomas brought early intensity and composure, adding 7 points and a pair of assists. Off the bench, Kenji Cooper and Omar Tovar provided valuable energy, combining for 11 points and key hustle plays.
The Flames’ defensive focus and communication were evident in stretches, forcing 13 turnovers and holding the Royals to several late-clock possessions in the first half. Bethesda also showed depth, with 24 bench points, and resilience, continuing to compete with intensity from start to finish.
While Hope International’s size and rebounding advantage proved decisive in the second half, the opener provided valuable lessons — and clear signs of growth for a new-look Bethesda team under an inspired coaching staff.
“We’re building something special,” said Head Coach Julio Lopez. “Tonight showed that our energy, pace, and commitment are real. We’re just beginning to scratch the surface of what this group can become.”
With the opener in the books, the Flames now turn their focus to their next challenge — ready to keep refining their rhythm, defensive rotations, and rebounding control. The team’s chemistry and fight set a promising tone for what’s ahead.
The 2025–26 season is officially underway, and the Flames are ready to rise.
