Costa Mesa, Calif. – Vanguard (9-6) took an early lead and defeated Bethesda University (3-14) by a score of 91-64 at The Pit.
The Lions jumped out quick and built a 10-3 lead just three minutes into the game. Vanguard played through their post and Bethesda struggled with the the VU bigs early. The Flames put up a fight, but never had a lead the entire night.
The Lions built up a 40-24 lead with just under five minutes to go in the half, but back came the Flames. The Flames went on a 11-5 run to trail by only 10 at the break. Bethesda came out of the half ready to play. Mark Ware hit a jumper to ignite the Flames at the start of the second half, Then Vanguard took control hitting the next 10 points.
With 10 minutes to go and the Lions up 69-48, The Flames tried to burn their way back into the game. The Lions roar was just to fierce.
Alex Reynolds was red hot from the Flames shooting 8-9 from the field and a perferct 5-5 from the beyond the arc. Reynolds finished the game with 21 points. Mark Ware chipped in with 12 points and 8 rebounds, while Daniel Chavez also finshed with 12 points.
The Flames will be back in action today as they take on Northwestern College at 1:30pm in the second day of the Bill Reynolds' Holiday Classic at Vanguard. The came be viewed live at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/vanguard/.
