Tucson, AZ – Bethesda University Flames defeat Luther College 13-9 and earn first win of the Tucson Invitational. Flames took an early lead in the first inning, when an error from opponents allowed them to score one run.
The Flames kept the lead throughout the game. Even though Luther caught up with the game in the fourth inning scoring four and tying up the game, at the bottom of the fourth inning Dylan Schafer tripled and allowed the Flames to complete two runs and return to leading position. Scorers for Bethesda Flames were Chris Carpio with three, Tyler Rios, Ivan Galindo, and John Peukert with two each, and Dylan Schafer, Hector Rodriguez, Cody Viena, and Alberto Pineda with one run each. The Flames had in total 20 hits in the game. Carpio and Schafer led the team in hits, having four for each.
Bethesda Flames' pitcher Antonio Elizalde took the team to the victory from the mound, allowing seven hits and eight runs over 4.1 innings and striking out seven. Nathan Dominguez went in as a relief pitcher to conclude the game. He recorded the last 14 outs to earn the save for Bethesda Flames.
John Colucci took the loss for Luther College from the mound,. Pitching 1.1 innings, he allowed seven hits, six runs, and forced three strikeouts. Scorers for Luther College were Trent Athmann, Bryce Hingst, and Joe McKibben with two runs each and Derek McCready, Owen VanderLinden, and Kelby Johnson with one run each. Luther College had in total 12 hits in the game. Athmann led Luther College with in hits in and at bats.
