Lady Flames Prepare to Enter a New Season

ANAHEIM, Calif. - As Patty Medina enters her second season as head coach for Bethesda, she and her team and assistants have a main goal for the 2017-18 basketball season…. reaching the NCCAA Tournament in Indiana. That goal begins on Oct. 24, 2017 with a 7 p.m. tip-off against, new NCCAA Member, Ottawa University in Surprise, Arizona.

Coming off an 8-16 head coach debut season, Medina starts the upcoming season with just three returning players, two of whom were red-shirts last year, and 12 new faces. The returning player is last year's starting point guard, senior Taylor Smalley, who was named NCCAA West Region Second Team.

"Taylor and the returning redshirts know the culture I am trying to instill here and we are going to rely on them heavily," said Medina. "They know my expectations and the leadership that I want from them."

"I love the core group of athletes that we have," said Coach. "We have some seasoned transfers from great JuCo programs that will impact us this season. The coaching staff that we added to the program this year has been a tremendous asset as well. They exemplify the 'stay hungry' mentality that we are trying to instill."

The Lady Flames' junior college transfers range from many dominant Southern California community colleges such as: Palomar College, Compton College, Fullerton College, Saddleback, Mt. San Jacinto, LA Trade Tech and San Diego City College.

"They all have been working hard and we are still trying to figure each other out," Coach said, adding "But it's all a process. These athletes are all hungry to succeed and push themselves to new levels. They bring knowledge of the game and are athletic."

What the second year coach now has that wasn't available a year ago was depth; the Flames played the majority of last season with only 8-9 players a game.  "We just didn't have the numbers a year ago because of injuries and other factors," said Medina. "It's normally tough with so many new athletes to get the chemistry together but I am proud of the steps they have taken so far."

The Flames full season schedule will be announced October 1st.
